Why should one invest in SIF?

SIFs (Specialized Investment Funds) in India are regulated under amendments to the SEBI (Mutual Funds) Regulations, 1996, introduced in December 2024, with a detailed framework detailed in a SEBI circular dated February 27, 2025, bridging the gap between MFs and PMS for sophisticated investors. They are overseen by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).

Key Details of SIFs

  • Minimum Investment: A minimum of ₹10 lakh is required per investor across all SIF strategies within a single AMC (Asset Management Company)
  • Investment Strategies: SIFs offer more flexibility than traditional mutual funds, allowing managers to use sophisticated "long-short" strategies (profiting from both rising and falling markets), tactical asset allocation, and exposure to alternative assets like REITs and InvITs.
  • Liquidity: Liquidity is generally lower than traditional mutual funds. Redemption frequencies can vary from daily to weekly or monthly, and an AMC may impose a notice period of up to 15 working days.
  • Taxation: SIFs are taxed similarly to mutual funds. For equity-oriented SIFs, long-term capital gains are taxed at 12.5%, and short-term gains at 20%.
